Noel might have brought something other than field notes and fond memories back from his trip.

This was one of the scariest things I’ve read in a long time. Mr. Larson did a wonderful job at setting the mood while slowly giving hints that something had gone terribly wrong while Noel, the main character’s husband, was conducting his research in northern Canada. I especially enjoyed the fact that Kristine needed some time to realize that Noel wasn’t acting like his normal self. As her excitement transitioned into fear, I only became more interested in finding out what had really happened to him while he was away.

It would have been helpful to have a more detailed explanation of what was going on in the final scene. The clues that were provided weren’t quite enough for me put all of the pieces together. Even now I’m not entirely sure that my understanding of the end was what the author meant to say. Had this section been clearer to me, I would have felt comfortable choosing a higher rating for this book.

The description of Kristine and Noel’s marriage was well written. They’d been together for so long that they were obviously quite comfortable around each other. Seeing such a settled and stable couple go through a horrifying experience that defied explanation made it impossible for me to stop reading. I simply had to know what would happen to them next.

Dark Warm Heart made me shudder. It should be read by anyone who finds joy in being frightened.

Dark Warm Heart A Torcom Original edition by Rich Larson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I don't usually gravitate toward short stories. Not that I think they are all bad. It's more of a personal thing. When I read a story I want to live in it for a while. I have to admit that it is the cover that attracted me to this little story. That cover is fantastic!

That being said, I thought this was excellent. There was a palpable sense of dread through out. I really wish this were a full length novel because I would devour every single page.
Dark Warm Heart by Rich Larson

2 stars

This is a story that I'm not sure how to describe. It's quite unsettling. A wife's husband comes back home after surviving frostbite and he becomes obsessed with transcripts that could lead him to understanding something about himself. It's a very a strange story and I wish that there had been more expansion upon the overall explanations. I can't really digest my thoughts on this without talking about the ending, so don't read on if you haven't read the story or read if you don't care about spoilers. I did enjoy that the transformation was that of a Wendigo. I remember the creature from Supernatural and it remains to be one of my favorite episodes. I also liked the ending and the implications that it held with a pregnancy and a second transformation. I do think this story would have improved if it had expanded further and didn't end abruptly. Also seeing product placement for CUTCO (a product I used to sale is a little weird).

Cover Thoughts I love the cover. It's dark, creepy and stays true to the Tor illustration style.
